Frequently used Terms of the Boy Scouts of America which Parents Should
Know
Achievement- A major Scout requirement. 12 achievements are required to earn Wolf or Bear ranks.
Activity Badge- One of 20 recognitions that may be earned by Webelos through various activities.
Advancement- The process by which a Cub Scout meets certain requirements and earns recognition.
Akela- (Pronounced Ah-KAY-La) A title of respect for anyone serving as leader. (from Kipling's Jungle Book)
Arrow of Light Award- Highest award in Cub Scouting. May be earned by Webelos Scouts
Arrow Point- Award for earning 10 elective credits in Wolf or Bear books. (10 Gold and 10 Silver.)
Baden-Powell, Robert- Lord BadenPowell, founder of the worldwide Scouting movement
Baloo- (Bah-LOO) Used by Bears as a title for leaders, just like "Akela" is used by the rest of the Pack.
Bear- The rank for third-grade (or age 9) Cub Scouts. Earned by completing 12 out of 24 achievements
Blue and Gold Banquet- A dinner in February to celebrate the founding of the BSA and Cub Scouting.
Bobcat- The first rank for all boys who join Cub Scouting.
Boy Scouts of America (BSA)- Founded in February 1910, and chartered by Congress in June 1916.
Boys' Life- The monthly magazine published by the Boy Scouts of America for all boys.
BSA Family Camping- An opportunity for the whole family to go camping on BSA property.
Buddy System- Used in Cub Scout activities for safety reasons, such as swimming in pairs.
Chartered Organization- A religious, civic, educational, or other group that has received a BSA charter.
Commissioners- Various Scouter volunteers who work with packs and troops to help the unit succeed.
Compass Points- A recognition earned by Webelos consisting of four activity badges.
Council- A chartered body of rep's. responsible for Scouting in a designated geographic area.
Cubmaster- A registered leader of the pack, 21 years of age or older.
Cub Scout- A boy who has completed first grade (or age 8) and is registered with a Cub Scout pack.
Cub Scout Day Camp- A 5-day program for Cubs and Webelos during daylight hours.
Cub Scouter- An adult registered member of a Cub Scout pack, 18 years of age or older.
Cub Scout Handshake- Used by Scouts and Scouters; given with the right hand with two fingers extended.
Cub Scout motto- Do Your Best.
Cub Scout Promise- I promise to do my best, to do my duty to God and my country, to help other people, and to obey the Law of the Pack.
Cub Scout Resident Camp- Overnight camp conducted by the council for Cubs, Webelos and their parents.
Cub Scout Salute- A two-finger hand salute made by Cub Scouts and Cub Scouters.
Cub Scout Sign- A "Victory" sign used during Scout Promise, Law of Pack, and when SILENCE is needed.
Den- A group of six to eight Cub Scouts or Webelos Scouts who usually meet once a week.
Den Chief- A Boy Scout who is at least the rank of First Class and helps direct Cub den activities.
Den Leader- A registered leader of the pack, at least 21 years of age, who leads a Cub Scout den.
Leaders Meeting- A monthly meeting to plan the month's den meetings and coordinate den activities.
Denner- A Cub Scout or Webelos Scout elected by his den to help the den leader and den chief.
District- A geographic administrative unit of a council.
District Chair- The executive officer of the district committee.
District Committee- Adult group responsible for carrying out the council program within their district.
District Executive- A professional Scouter who advises the volunteer leaders in the district.
Elective- A BSA advancement oportunity. There are 22 in the Wolf Book and 24 in the Bear Book. Scouts earn one Arrow Point for every 10 elective projects completed. Try as many of these as possible at home.
Friends of Scouting (FOS)- Financial supporters of the BSA program. Recognition is made public.
Graduation- A pack ceremony to welcome pack members into the next rank of Cub Scouting.
Induction- A ceremony recognizing new Cub Scouts joining the pack; Bobcat recognition.
Law of the Pack- The Cub Scout follows Akela. The Cub Scout helps the pack go. The pack helps the Cub Scout grow. The Cub Scout gives goodwill.
Local council service center- The business center for the local administration of Scouting.
Pack- A unit, made up of dens, which conducts the Cub Scout program for the chartered organization.
Pack leaders' meeting- A monthly meeting of pack leaders to plan the affairs of the pack.
Pack meeting- A monthly meeting of all dens for games, skits, awards, and other recognitions.
Pinewood Derby- A pack activity that involves shaping and racing wooden block cars on a track.
Pow Wow- An annual training course for Cub Scout leaders conducted by the district or council.
Professional- A registered, full-fime employee of the Boy Scouts of America.
Rally Night- A special gathering for families to explain to them how Cub Scouting operates.
Registration- The payment of a Scout's annual registration fee to the Boy Scouts of America.
Roundtable- A monthly program and morale-building meeting for Scout leaders, held by the district.
Scouter- A registered adult member of the BSA.
Scouting Distributor- A local business or firm licensed to sell Scouting equipment and uniforms.
Scouting Magazine- The official magazine for all Scouters.
Service Star- A pin worn over the uniform's left shirt pocket to denote number of years of service.
Summer Time Activities - A pin worn over the uniform's right shirt pocket to denote attending the packs summer time activities.
Tenure- A term used to describe the length of one's service and membership in Scouting.
Tiger Cub- A boy who is in first grade (or age 7) and registered as a member of a Tiger Cub den.
Tiger Cub Den- 5-8 Tiger Cubs and adult partners who meet twice monthly for a shared experience.
Tiger Cub Den Coordinator- Adult member of the Tiger Cub den who helps maintain shared leadership and works with Tiger den leaders to coordinate plans for involving the Tiger Cub den in Cub Scout pack activities.
Tour Permit- A reqired form to help units plan safe and enjoyable trips and to ensure proper emergency procedures.
Training Course- A series of training experiences designed to help leaders understand their jobs.
Uniform Inspection- When members are reviewed for their properly uniformed appearance.
Unit- Term used to designate any one of the following: pack, troop, team, crew, or ship.
Volunteer- A registered individual who donates service, time, and/or funds to support programs of the BSA.
Webelos Den Leader- A registered adult leader in the pack, at least age 21, who leads a Webelos den.
Webelos Draw- A random drawing to determine when your unit goes to Webelos camp.
Webelos Scout- A Cub Scout who has completed 3rd-grade, or is age 10. They wear distinctive uniforms.
Wolf- The rank for second-grade (or age 8) Cub Scouts. Earned by completing 12 achievements.
World Friendship Fund- The means by which U.S. Scouts and Scouters can provide material to help Scouting around the world.
